Hello everyone and welcome to yet another 205 Live review. This edition features a match up between Drew Gulak & Humberto Carrillo, a feud which has been built up over the last few weeks. It also features a Cruiserweight Championship number one contendership match where Ariya Daivari takes on Oney Lorcan who is fresh off of a big win against Cedric Alexander last week. Enough rambling, let’s get into the action.
Drew Gulak vs Humberto Carrillo
A match which has been in the making since ‘Gentleman’ Jack Gallagher saved Carrillo from Gulak, Drew Gulak faces off against his ‘ungrateful’ student, Humberto Carrillo. The incredibly technically sound submission specialist, Gulak, takes on the high flying luchador, Carrillo in a clash of styles but one which I’ve been really excited to see. A hard-hitting contest through and through, these two managed to put on a brilliant match, back-and-forth throughout. Eventually, both men find themselves down on the ground where they eventually meet in the corner where Gulak delivers some elbows to the back of Carrillo’s head, wearing him down. Gulak manages to have just enough strength left in him to lift Carrillo to the top rope. On the top rope, Carrillo manages to deliver an open palm strike to Gulak, knocking him down and onto the canvas. Gulak gets back up and tries to knock Carrillo off the top, only to be dropped with a sunset flip powerbomb by Carrillo. Carrillo follows it up with a headspring Aztec press and a 1, 2, 3 (@15:20). Carrillo is victorious over his former mentor, cementing his place as a very promising up-and-comer on 205 Live. A very good match, these two clicked and put on a showcase of their skills, seamlessly transitioning between their contrasting styles and working well to put on a really, really good match.
Ariya Daivari vs Oney Lorcan – Number One Contendership (for the Cruiserweight Championship)
A very important match in the future of 205 Live, Daivari and Lorcan face off for the first time to determine who will face Tony Nese in the future for the Cruiserweight Championship. Contrary to the first match, these two work similar styles (brawling, hard-hitting) and as such I was very intrigued to see if they could bring some other elements to the table to spruce up this contest. They definitely managed to do that as they worked on brutalising each other until their opponent physically was unable to compete anymore. Will Daivari’s undefeated streak of 2019 come to an end or will it continue on his way to the Cruiserweight Championship. Speaking of the Cruiserweight Championship, Cruiserweight Champion Tony Nese sat ringside, analysing his competition throughout the match. Throughout the match, both men used various submissions and strikes to try and get the better of their opponent. Deep into the match, Daivari somehow managed to escape the half-and-half suplex, nail Lorcan with a beatiful superkick and lock in his cobra clutch. With Lorcan down and the ground and fading, the referee drops Lorcan’s hand but he manages to keep it up, signalling he was still alive in the match. A defiant Lorcan gets to his feet and breaks the hold with multiple slaps to Daivari’s face. Lorcan then launches himself off the ropes and connects with a terrifying running uppercut before lifting Daivari onto the top rope. Daivari manages to fight Lorcan off and he goes for a frog splash, only to miss and get caught with a running clothesline in the corner from Lorcan and some uppercuts. Lorcan runs up to Daivari hoping to connect with another running uppercut only to be caught with a superkick from Daivari. Daivari scales the turnbuckles and manages to connect with his frog splash. Quickly, he follows it up with a hammerlock lariat to finish off Lorcan and pick up the victory (@15:17). After the match, Nese and Daivari face off, giving us a taste of what’s to come next. Wow, what a match. These two literally beat the life out of each other until Lorcan physically couldn’t kick out anymore. This was spectacular and I’m really glad that Daivari is finally getting a shot at the Cruiserweight Championship, I’ve been super impressed with work as of late.
