Thought it was a nice matchup to set the bar. Both men
had a great tournament up to this point with Archer being the standout star
amongst everyone else in the block. While EVIL tried to fight off the much
bigger opponent, the American Psycho finally got a third victory before he caps
off his 5th G1 with the EBD Claw at the 10 minute mark.

Bad Luck Fale def. He
actually had a decent match against SANADA to end the tournament. Obviously it
wasn’t a 5 star classic or anything, but serviceable enough for me to rate it
as good. There’s still that dojo trained man inside of Fale, he just rarely
busts it out nowadays but when he does, you get a fun little match like this
one. Ring General at it again though with his upsets, pinning SANADA with an
Inside Cradle also at the 10 minute mark with 38 seconds to add. So yeah not a
bad way to conclude his possible final G1 for Fale, as for SANADA, a title shot
could be on the horizon once more.

Zack Sabre Jr. def. For those who don’t know,
KENTA and ZSJ were in Pro Wrestling NOAH, with the latter even training at the
promotion’s dojo. One of the trainers at said dojo who really made it feel like
hell for the students was KENTA. ZSJ had a nice little run over at NOAH in
their junior heavyweights division, at this point KENTA was already on his way
out to go to the WWE. Years later as their paths diverged, they meet again this
time in an NJPW ring. Budokan was the home of All Japan Pro Wrestling for many
years, NOAH of course can trace its roots back to AJPW so many dots are
connected with this one match. I just love stuff like this so forgive me for
ragging on for too long but anyways onto the match.

Knowing his background of injuries, ZSJ really
exploited KENTA’s right arm and shoulder. At some points, the shots he was
taking were even making me cringe just for how real they looked like. Felt like
s**t regardless for him. It was a really great match, one of KENTA’s best
performances, while Zack did his usual submission moves, he got into some
strike exchanges with the opposition too. In the end, the kohai got the best of
his senpai with ZSJ making KENTA give up with an armbar straight to the injured
spot. Very intense match, couldn’t think of a better way to cap off their
respective G1’s.

Will Ospreay def. Hiroshi Tanahashi, The Ace of the Universe taking on someone who
is willing to do anything to reach a similar spot in his career, The reigning
IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion: Will Ospreay. As we know already, Ospreay is
arguably the Wrestler of the Year for 2019. He had flawless performances in the
NJ Cup, BOSJ, the Australian tour, and now the G1! Him defeating a superstar in
the caliber of Tanahashi would cement his own legacy forever in the history of
New Japan Pro Wrestling. He was able to accomplish that after such an
intensified and fast paced match. Both men clearly gave it their all, even Tana
who we know can still deliver instant classics despite the state of his body.
The shots both men hit each other, especially from Ospreay to Tana such as the
missile kick to the face were just crazy. Tana also reversing Ospreay’s move
into a Slingblade was a thing of beauty as well. The Hidden Blade is one of the
most devastating looking maneuvers in wrestling today, the way Ospreay hits his
opponent with it make you feel like he would literally cut their heads off!
Just insane stuff from top to bottom, all compacted into a nicely timed 17
minute affair.

Ospreay is being groomed as the next top babyface
gaijin after Kenny Omega. After defeating The Ace with a Stormbreaker, that
spot could truly be his one day.

A Block Finals:

Kota Ibushi def. That’s how long it
has been since the last singles encounter of The Rainmaker and The Golden Star.
A lot has happened in between those years and now, they face off with a chance
to headline the Tokyo Dome. It’s winner takes all, if it went down to a time
limit draw however, Okada wins. But of course that wasn’t what happened, a
match they’ve been protecting for a long time, Kota Ibushi is finally able to
get a win over Kazuchika Okada. The match itself was obviously good, I mean
it’s two of the very best wrestlers in the whole world today BUT. It’s clear
they aren’t going all out. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a fantastic match,
borderline 5 stars even, but they’re saving up for more to come. As they say in
Dragon Ball, their final form or full potential haven’t even been released yet.

The action was mainly contained inside the ring.
They definitely got you glued throughout the 25 minutes of the entire match. I
was a little underwhelmed though because I know both men are capable of so much
more but I guess we all have to be patient to witness the true greatness these
two have to offer. Still, it is undoubtedly one of the best G1 matches this
year and a perfect way to conclude the A Block. Ibushi gained one step closer
to the top and enters the finals second year in a row by defeating the man at
the very top. Taichi was of course trained by the
legendary Toshiaki Kawada, one of the all time greats of AJPW, some might even
say THE greatest. Then you have Ishii who learned under the tutelage of
Genichiro Tenryu, another disciple of Giant Baba. Taichi has been having subpar
to good matches in this tournament so far, but this one he really gave it his
all, plus Ishii as we know at this point could always bring out the best in anyone
so we got ourselves a good ol’ fashion strong style bout. It is rare nowadays
for Taichi to compete clean but that is exactly what we got, a serious no
nonsense Holy Emperor, channeling his inner Kawada and it paid off. After
multiple exchanges of strikes and maneuvers, Taichi beats Ishii with a Black
Mephisto, ending his first G1 on a high note. A NEVER Openweight title shot is
on the horizon and with what they’ve shown here, I wouldn’t mind to see more.
If Taichi wants to treat a match seriously, he could be on the same level as
the other top guys, but I think that’s what makes him a smart worker too,
choosing the right spots and moments on where to unleash the influence brought
unto him by Dangerous K.

Juice Robinson def. A little
side note, it’s cool to see Shota (aka Shooter) wearing Mox’s jacket on his
vignette. Slowly but surely he’s definitely going on that Atsushi Onita route,
all he needs is some cigar and barbed wire to complete the set. Anyway it was a
good story told in this match, Moxley tries to get weapons every time to use
against his opponent but Juice would refuse on using them, whether it be a
chair or a table. I thought it’s a nice touch to Juice’s character, despite
finding a new attitude, overall he’s still a good guy and wouldn’t dare to use
such tactics even though he could take advantage of it and use those weapons
against someone he despises. His leg however got worked for the majority of the
match, which was a result of Switchblade’s work making him tap out with the TTO
submission hold in his previous match, Mox exploited Juice’s weakness but in
the end to no avail. I thought we were going to get some kind of DQ finish but
I’m glad Juice got the Pulp Friction at the 16 minute and 26 second mark to avenge
his loss to his rival. It’s now 1-1 between these two in a New Japan ring and
it’s clear they haven’t gone all out in this one, the rubber match would be
something to look forward for.

Shingo Takagi def. Well Shingo
and Goto has got you covered. Despite what I think is a common respect for one
another, these two made you feel they’re like bitter enemies with the way they
were striking one another. Real stiff moves, especially from the part of
Shingo. There were a few false finishes here and there too which got me but The
Dragon got the best of the Samurai Warrior. A Last of the Dragon ends Goto’s
hopes of potentially reaching the finals as he was still mathematically alive
going into this match. After this it was officially announced that Shingo is
now a part of the heavyweights division. Does it mean we’re going to witness
the return of a ticking time bomb anytime soon? I’m a Tetsuya Naito fan, he is the reason why I got into
New Japan Pro Wrestling, I went for AJ Styles but stayed because of LIJ and
then went on to appreciate the rest of the roster. I’ve followed this man ever
since he became El Ingobernable. His story couldn’t be any more perfect,
especially leading up to Wrestle Kingdom 12. He won his second G1 Climax two
years ago after a fantastic finals defeating Kenny Omega, he went on to finally
main event the Tokyo Dome against Kazuchika Okada but ended up choking and
unable to re-gain the most prestigious belt ever. Since then Naito has
floundered but with every upcoming G1, me and my fellow Naito fans dream of
seeing him back in the position only this time for him to win the belt. WK12
was THE time to do it but they didn’t. Okay, I’ll be patient let’s see where it
goes. At least we got the Okada vs. Omega IV and then Naito feuded with Chris
Jericho which was fun and all but it’s far from the IWGP Title picture. Now all
the stars seemed to have aligned for him to finally do it this year, with the
hopes of becoming the first to hold the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental
Championships, a re-match against The Rainmaker in the Tokyo Dome, it just writes
itself. And yet, we’re back to square one. It’s not that hard to understand,
I’m a Naito fan, and I want my favorite wrestler to win. Don’t we all? Which is
why I was so disappointed when he didn’t kick out of 3 after that Bladerunner. I
do have some other favorite wrestlers from different promotions, but I’m not as
invested to them as I am to Naito. I could somewhat relate to his story and now
failure has struck the leader of LIJ once more.

Then we go to Jay White. Switchblade is a true dying
breed of wrestlers which makes him so great. A true genuine villain, not an
ounce of coolness, not even love to hate him, just pure hatred. That’s what he
makes you feel. The Miz, you’re still impressed by his mic skills, other heels
like Undisputed Era or even some members of the Bullet Club, they’re seen as
“cool.” But Switchblade, you just despise him with every ounce of
your being. You can see that he is a great worker but boy you just hate the
character, he also doesn’t need to use any offensive stuff say like a Fritz Von
Erich with his nazi gimmick or Col. DeBeers with his controversial anti South
African gimmick. All Switchblade does is breath and be the character, you hate
him immediately. He takes down your favorite wrestlers and that’s what he made
me feel, nothing but frustration.

The match itself? It was alright. I mean there isn’t
anything much to say, it wasn’t a 5 star classic or anything to that extent but
good enough. At the end of the day though, it won’t be the match that most
people will remember, but the result. Potentially the final chance of Naito’s
entire career of being back at the top. What a story.

B Block Final Leaderboard:

12
Points = Jay White (Finalist)

10
Points = Naito, Moxley, Goto

8 Points = Cobb, Ishii, Juice, Taichi, Shingo, Yano

Night
19

Date: August 12, 2019

From: Nippon Budokan (Tokyo, Japan)

Match #1 – Tag Team:

Clark
Connors & Karl Fredericks def. The man just screams
superstar, he’s got the looks and the size of a future champion and has the
most potential out of anyone in the class in my opinion. Clark Connors is great
too, will be participating in the Super J Cup. Then you got Yota Tsuji, whom as
mentioned in the Super J-Cast has a big potential to become a top heel one day.
With his current look I think he’ll fit with a character like a Great Kabuki,
but I don’t know how a character like that would work nowadays so maybe
something similar to an Akitoshi Saito or Masashi Aoyagi would suit him too, we
just have to wait and see. Narita of course if you’ve seen the BOSJ, has
improved immensely over the past few months alone. The future is bright for New
Japan in various parts of the world.

The match itself was greatly worked too, I did not
expect the LA Dojo boys to win but Connors made Tsuji tap out with the Boston
Crab. Cobb
gets the win for his team at only 7 minutes in, hitting the Tour of the Islands
on Kanemaru.

Match #3 – Six Man Tag:

Ospreay,
SHO, & YOH def. Ishimori, Chase, & Yujiro

A classic CHAOS vs. Bullet Club match. Seems to me
they’re setting up Ospreay vs. Ishimori for Royal Quest but I would prefer if
he goes against El Phantasmo, don’t know why he’s not booked here. Roppongi 3K
are back as well, SHO & YOH had a fantastic showing in the BOSJ and now
they want payback to Ishimori who captured the IWGP Jr. Tag Belts from RP3K
along with the aforementioned Phantasmo. Chase & Yujiro have been regulars
throughout the tour, as well as Pieter. Always lovely to see her. I really like
the chemistry of Ospreay and RP3K, if possible and I know the belts don’t mean
much, but I think they’d make a great NEVER 6 Man Tag Champs. Yujiro takes the
L for his team, receiving a Stormbreaker from the reigning Junior Heavyweight
Champion.

Match #4 – Tag Team:

Juice
Robinson & Toa Henare def. Jon Moxley & Shota Umino

A preview of their inevitable rematch again with
Juice this time teaming up with Toa Henare against Moxley and Shooter. Pretty
standard tag match, it’s just a build really for what’s to come. I was pretty
impressed with Henare in this match, if only he gets something fresh, maybe
tweak his character. There is potential in him, he just has to find it
eventually. He gets the win for his team, hitting Umino with the Toa Bottom.
After the match, Mox wasn’t done with Juice, attacked him some more and then
puts him through a table.

Match #5 – Ten Man Tag:

Los
Ingobernables de Japon def. GBH & CHAOS

All active members of Los Ingobernables de Japon
took on the mixed team of CHAOS representatives in Toru Yano and Hirooki Goto,
as well as GBH members Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma, of course leading the
charge is Funky Weapon himself Ryusuke Taguchi, The Gooch is back! Again, just
your typical 10 man tag. All wrestlers managed to get their stuff in, minus
Yano actually who I think never got legally tagged in, being put on a Paradise
Lock by SANADA to the entrance ramp earlier on. Seems like a rematch between
Shingo and Goto is on the horizon now that The Dragon is officially a
heavyweight. With them raising their fists up by the end, getting the victory,
I expected another pareja of them to
return, but sadly looks like he ain’t coming back yet anytime soon.

Match #6 – Six Man Tag:

GoD & Fale def. Ishii, YOSHI-HASHI, & KENTA

Photo (c) f4wonline.com

Let’s get the match out of the way real quick. Once
again, your typical six man tag, GoD the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Tag-Team
Champions are back after touring with ROH. The moment this was announced I
found the other team a little odd, you got two CHAOS members in Ishii and
YOSHI-HASHI, then KENTA who really looked out of place. What got me was that
KENTA never got tagged in and when Fale attacked the corner, it was only Ishii
that he hits, plus with the tweet from Tama earlier that they’ve recruited a
new “high caliber athlete” among the ranks of Bullet Club, my
suspicions became high of the former WWE wrestler. Then we go to the betrayal.

KENTA moved out of the way as Ishii was about to
make the tag, he then proceeds to go back and hits the Go To Sleep on the Stone
Pitbull, Tama getting the pin. A new Bullet Club member is born… but
retaliation was on its way. To say I was shocked would be an understatement,
Katsuyori Shibata, the man that brought KENTA to New Japan, his tag-team
partner, trainer, and friend. Rushed into the ring and attacked his now
ex-bestfriend. For someone who was on the verge of literal death, Shibata moved
like he never lost a step! The high kicks and elbows towards KENTA, man you can
just feel the emotion coming out of those strikes, plus his eyes you can see
both the disappointment and anger due to the treacherous acts of someone who he
thought was loyal. But eventually the numbers game were too much, BC kept on
disrespecting Shibata with KENTA hitting the PK on him then doing his iconic
pose on top of Shibata himself. After being hated by the New Japan fans and
feeling like a total outsider, KENTA felt at home with the outsiders of the
roster, the roots in which the Bullet Club founded itself. This has been a long
overdue needed resurgence both for the faction and KENTA himself.

Match #7 – Tag Team:

Minoru
Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. def. Kazuchika Okada & Hiroshi Tanahashi

After those revelations that we just witnessed, what
could be considered a “breather” match is actually involving four of
the very best wrestlers in the world. Minoru Suzuki and his protege Zack Sabre
Jr. takes on what is dubbed as the “Dream Team” of Kazuchika Okada
and Hiroshi Tanahashi. Funny enough, despite combining arguably two of the
greatest in New Japan, the record of Okada & Tana as a team isn’t that
impressive, mainly on the losing side. That proved to be true once again in
this situation, Suzuki defeats the champion with his patented Gotch Style
Piledriver. Seemingly setting up another match with The Rainmaker for Royal
Quest. Okada & Suzuki never disappoint with their matches so UK fans are
really lucky to receive such a treat in your soil. Then ZSJ vs. Tana is pretty
much confirmed for the same event as well, they however would be duking it out
for the RPW British Heavyweight Championship. This match itself was good, I
mean obviously with the caliber of these four, it’s just that most of us are
still in states of shock with what we’ve witnessed beforehand.

Match #8 – G1 Climax 29 Finals:

Kota Ibushi def. Jay White

Photo (c) njpw1972.com

Last but not the least, this is where it all leads
to. 18 nights of grueling nonstop action will finally find its conclusion. Kota
Ibushi of A Block and Jay White of B Block will duke it out for the finals of
the 29th Annual G1 Climax. For the second year in a row Ibushi is back in the
same position, he was close last year but fell at the hands of Tanahashi. Now
he has surpassed God, and will face evil incarnate himself. Switchblade has
prophesized this will happen, we all denied him and looked to be in peril at
the beginning losing three straight to his former CHAOS stablemates whom he
betrayed, but now he has done the biggest upset perhaps in G1 history,
defeating Tetsuya Naito in the block finals and cementing himself as THE top
heel of NJPW.

If from the beginning they were going for Ibushi
anyway, then it is excellent that Switchblade was on the opposite side.
Everyone in the entire arena and people watching all over the world, even those
who chose Jay in their pick’ems, wanted The Golden Star to win. We all wanted
nothing but to see Jay get knee’d in the face. Tokyo is usually a polite crowd
but they were all united in hating one man and that was Switchblade.

Before the match, the entire Bullet Club came out
with Jay White, really takes you back the old days of BC wherein Devitt and Styles
were always accompanied by their brothers at ringside. But this time, Red Shoes
has seen enough. He has kicked out every member out there including the newly
recruited KENTA, Gedo however was permitted to stay barring the rest of them
were out. Of course later on he would be kicked out himself but would come back
eventually. They really tried everything to cheat their way to victory and
bring back glory to BC. But kudos to Red Shoes for having none of that s**t.

Anyway as for the match itself, I thought it was the
best match of Jay White’s career yet. Both men had me at the edge of my seat
the entire time. I’m not the biggest Kota Ibushi fan but for that night, I was.
Rooting hard for him with every step and move, hoping that he would bring
disappointment to Jay White. By the end I was nervous, I thought it was all
over for Ibushi, I’d be feeling anger once again. The brainbuster + bladerunner
combination that ended Naito’s dreams was so close on ending Ibushi’s as well
but that was reversed. Ibushi hits the Kamigoye at the 31 minute mark and takes
the victory. What a rollercoaster ride of emotions, especially for the final
minutes of sequence. That is what professional wrestling is all about. The
sheer drama of it gets you attached with this beautiful good vs. evil story, in
the end the bright side looms over and all is right with the world. Kota Ibushi
has now become the first man to win the New Japan Cup, Best of the Super
Juniors, and G1 Climax. Three of the premier tournaments in New Japan history.
A feat only fitting for a Golden Star.

That ladies and gentlemen, was the 29th G1 Climax.

By Jhester Metchado@SuperMastodon Night 17 Date: August 10, 2019 From: Nippon Budokan (Tokyo, Japan) Undercard Results: Jon Moxley & Shota Umino def.
