Lance Archer

Once again, Archer continues to impress with another
terrific match against Kota Ibushi. As expected Ibushi worked mainly as the
underdog in peril to the much bigger opponent. If anything, Ibushi plays that
role perfectly and I couldn’t think of a better big mean villain to go along
with that than Archer. In comparison to the other Archer matches though, this
one had a faster pace than usual. It did not overstay it’s welcome and it took
two Kamigoye’s to actually put Archer down at the 11 minute and 42 second mark.
A nice way to set the bar for the rest of the matches.

Will
Ospreay def. Bad Luck Fale

The match itself? Not much happened other than your
usual Ospreay moveset and Fale shenanigans with Jado and Chase. The only
noteworthy thing really is the finish, original referee which I believe to be
Marti Asani gets knocked out, Fale does a lot of B.S. and then Red Shoes goes
in for the count, but wait… He hates the Bullet Club just as much as Yoshi
Tatsu and disqualifies Fale, getting the first DQ finish of the entire
tournament this year! DQ’s were a frequent occurrence in last year’s G1 with
Fale and Tama, but if they do it in small doses like this, it actually means
something. Red Shoes is the true MVP of this match.

EVIL
def. Zack Sabre Jr.

Many times they’ve faced each other in the past, ZSJ
always had EVIL’s number. But this year it’s a different story for Zack. Everyone
in the field has experienced his submission techniques and have found solutions
to counter them, EVIL is no different. While I prefer their past matches, this
one isn’t a slouch either. A solid 16 minute bout with two drastically
different styles and they never disappoint. Everything is Evil for the win.

Hiroshi
Tanahashi def. SANADA

This match felt like it had it all. A story of the
young star going against the veteran Ace of the universe. Technical holds to
strong strikes. While Okada is the current face of New Japan right now and rightfully
so, during this match it felt like SANADA is the honorary successor to Tana, at
least that’s how I felt. Both idolized Keiji Mutoh as well so there’s that. A
great back and forth between them and my only complaint is for SANADA to
actually get the win but I understand he is going against the defending G1
winner so they don’t want Tana looking weak and he is still capable of being a
good wrestler after all, his G1 sendoff is still pretty far. After 18 minutes
of action, the High Fly Flow was effectively used to take home the victory.

Kazuchika Okada def. One man is the greatest champion in company history while the other is still treated as an outsider, trying to redeem himself at home. Anytime New Japan visits America for Mania weekend, I always see photos of Okada not only hanging out with his mentor Shinsuke Nakamura, but KENTA as well. Always had this as one of my dream matches and boy did it deliver. Probably my favorite KENTA match so far, even better than the ones he had with Ibushi and Tanahashi earlier on. Instead of being the disrespectful wrestler to veterans, he’s the one playing the vet role this time against a much younger and faster opponent. Going into this match both men are undefeated, this one had the most glimpses of the KENTA of old. His past matches you may see moves or spots that remind you of what has been, but this one throughout the match, I felt the intensity a young KENTA would’ve exuberated. Okada really does bring out the best out of anyone. There were instances where KENTA could’ve won and I wouldn’t mind actually since Okada does need a fresh challenger for his title but I guess it’s not meant to be right now. KENTA’s streak on New Japan has been ended with a Rainmaker after a glorious 26 minute match. Imagine if his younger self would’ve wrestled here, it could very well rival if not be better than Okada vs. Omega but alas that will only be a dream for eternity.

Night
10

Date: July 28, 2019

From: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium (Aichi, Japan)

Undercard Results:

Ren Narita def. Goto literally pulled a roll up on Yano a minute into the match
and that’s that. A win for the Samurai Warrior is always a good thing. YTR will
get another moment later on.

Tomohiro
Ishii def. Juice Robinson

I hate sounding repetitive here but man, Tomohiro
Ishii is the MVP of this tournament and it showed. I love Juice, big fan of his
but he rarely meshes well with a lot of wrestlers in the roster and we’ll get
more onto that later, with Ishii though, you bet they meshed well and what a
hard hitting affair this was! Ever since that Moxley match, Juice had a change
of attitude and brought more hard hitting strikes into his arsenal. Arguably
Juice’s best match in the tournament by far and I actually did not expect this
to be as good as it turned out, but it’s a welcomed surprise. These two just
went at it nonstop for the whole 17 minutes. Ishii’s patented vertical drop
brain-buster earned him the win in the end though. I wish Juice would’ve won
and challenge for the NEVER belt because man I wanted to see more action
between these two!

Jeff
Cobb def. Taichi

Going to be completely honest, I don’t remember much
from this match. It was a solid affair for sure but their match for the NEVER
Openweight title earlier this year was more memorable. Not a great match nor it
is bad. Just decent is the best way to describe it I think. Cobb wins with the
Tour of the islands avenging his loss to the Holy Emperor at the 12 minute
mark.

Jay
White def. Shingo Takagi

The Ishii vs. Juice match is the best of the night
for me, but Switchblade vs. Shingo is surprisingly not that far behind. A first
time matchup between these two and barring the interferences from Gedo, this
was actually a great match. Jay as always plays the villain role so well, even
better than Marty Scurll but I digress. He doesn’t get much credit into this
aspect, but Shingo can really work the crowd well and get them all behind his
back, cheering against the evil gaijin wrestler. Dare I say he’s better at it
than EVIL and SANADA both of whom are his LIJ compatriots. Anyway, it was a
solid effort from both men, will probably go down as one of the underrated
matches of the entire tournament. Jay wins with the Bladerunner after a match
time of 19 minutes and 26 seconds.

Jon Moxley def. Now first, I’ll get this out of the way, the match itself was actually disappointing. Again, it was good but it didn’t seem to click well between these two. The taunting was fun and all but the execution of action did not feel like it was there, no instant chemistry unlike with Mox and Ishii or even Shingo. Maybe their styles are just way too drastic with one another for it to work the first time. The finish though, that’s what really got into everyone. Social media exploded with the Moxley victory as seemingly everyone, like myself, picked Naito to win and eventually headline Wrestle Kingdom once more but that felt like it was thwarted for a moment when Mox hits the Death Rider and take the win. This was a champion vs. champion after all but man nobody expected going into this year’s G1 for Mox to go undefeated in his first 5 matches, I guess New Japan is really milking this for however long they’ll have him. I don’t mind it at the very least and I actually wasn’t mad that Naito loss, it’s just that I still hope the dream of seeing him be double champ is alive after the tournament.

Night
11

Date: July 30, 2019

From: Takamatsu City General Gymnasium #1 (Kagawa,
Japan)

Undercard Results:

Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, & Tsuji def. Bad Luck Fale

A forgettable match. Just a slog. It’s harsh but a
Honma match would’ve been more entertaining. Okada and Ibushi can’t get a good
match out of Fale, hopefully this is a sign it’s over for him next year. I
don’t really do match ratings but if I were to follow the Meltzer scale, this
is what you can call a DUD.

Zack
Sabre Jr. def. Will Ospreay

Kevin Kelly mentioned on commentary that this is the
first British vs. British matchup in the entire history of the G1. It’s pretty
crazy but I don’t know any other British wrestlers besides these two and Lord
Steven Regal that have competed so there you go, a fun little fact. What was
also fun is the match itself, man was it good! After that nothing match between
Ibushi and Fale, we were treated with a nice clash of styles between ZSJ and
Ospreay. One wrestles in the classic submission World of Sport way while the
other has a heavy influence from the rich history of lucha libre. The match was
worked perfectly from top to bottom. ZSJ mainly working on Ospreay’s injury and
the latter really sold me on his underdog run throughout the match. In theory a
matchup between a highflyer and technical wrestler may not work but these are
very much familiar with each other at this point and as Rocky said they are two
of the best British wrestlers today so it’s no surprised that they brought one
helluva match to the table! Lots of counter wrestling as well, just every
second mattered and got you glued to the screen. In the end Zack got another
win over the junior heavyweight champ. I was hoping for an Ospreay victory and
maybe get a re-match down the line at Royal Quest but it doesn’t look like it’s
going to head that way. “Hurrah!
Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than the Last; The Inexorable
March of Progress Will Lead Us All to Happiness” managed to get ZSJ
the win, plus imagining Ospreay as Boris Johnson probably helped too.

Kazuchika
Okada def. Lance Archer

Before Okada could even remove his glorious gear,
Archer attacked him and that’s mainly the story for the first half of this
match. Okada getting decimated by the American Psycho. Lance is even more
crazier than usual, attacking and scaring anyone in his sights. Young lions,
camera men, referee, and even a little kid! Archer making kids cry, just
another weekday for him. Anyway Okada would rally back and eventually get the
win after a single Rainmaker. There were some complaining about that but you
have to remember, Okada is being presented as the greatest wrestler alive in
New Japan. Having his finisher get kicked out often would diminish it so I
didn’t mind it at all. I was surprised when it first occurred but it just goes
to show you we are pretty much used to false finishes at this point, so yeah a
one hit KO isn’t so bad. Later on Okada went to the kid and cheered him up,
can’t get any more babyface than that.

SANADA
def. KENTA

Another match wherein KENTA is going up against a
New Japan talent for the first time in SANADA. I have to address this somewhere
so I’ll go on ahead and do it here, apparently some Japanese fans are really
not welcoming of KENTA according to the Super J-Cast twitter, especially in the
YouTube comments where he isn’t exactly treated nicely, getting sentiments such
as “he should’ve stayed in NOAH” and “be gone from the
company” stuff like that. It just opened my eyes that there are those
typical fans in Japan as well, I guess having “smart marks” if you
will isn’t solely a Western idea but for the rest of the world. I for one like
KENTA and what he’s been doing so far but from their perspective and if they
are long time New Japan fans I get it but they might have to deal with it for I
see KENTA staying for a long time.

Now with that out of the way, onto the match. I
thought it was just another decent match. Nothing really stands out, it had a
similar pace to his Ibushi match at opening night. At least that’s how I felt.
SANADA actually wins with the Mutoh Moonsault and I guess they’re building him
up to be Okada’s first defeat or draw and eventually face again for the title.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always liked Okada and SANADA matches but it feels
like it’s been overdone in such a short span of time. I would’ve preferred KENTA
challenging for the title instead as it is something new but that may be on the
back burner for now.

Hiroshi Tanahashi def. For the fans who just got into New Japan this year, I think
this is the best showcase for you to understand why Tana is such a beloved
figure. You can see how instantly he can get the crowd riled up and cheer him,
leading to a victory or at the very least a solid comeback. Men, women,
children, all are rooting for Tana despite knowing the damage that has taken a
toll on him for the past decade, carrying the company in his back and saving
New Japan from obscurity. Have to give props to EVIL as well for playing the
heel role for the most part, it’s like him in Naito’s shoes during this match,
another one of Tana’s rivals. He is very much past his prime now but it shows
you that with proper story and opponent, Tanahashi can still bust out instant
classics if he damn well pleases. It’s honestly been Cobb’s second best match of the tournament so far
in my opinion, only behind his Ishii match. Mox has proved that he can work both a serious and comedy match, I know
that’s kind of established during his time with the WWE but it couldn’t be more
apparent with this match. Him and Yano have a perfect chemistry of goofiness
and madness. Yano tied up Moxley’s feet to Shooter (Shota Umino) outside with
his signature tape and earned the count out victory. Juice Robinson

With YTR getting the win over Moxley, Naito and
Switchblade’s hopes of winning the G1 are kept alive. I’ve mentioned earlier,
Juice is a good wrestler but doesn’t nearly mesh well with styles of the other
New Japan wrestlers and I guess this is just another case of that. Not all good
wrestlers whenever pitted against one another will give you an instant classic,
sometimes it just turns out to be decent. Which I’ll take all day rather than a
Fale match but enough about the guy. Lots of teasing between these two though
which I found fun, such as Juice taking a lot of his time removing three
shirts, then Naito mocking the “Juice!” chant. The match itself was
serviceable but nothing worthy of jumping out of your seat. Destino at 13
minutes and 47 seconds.

Jay
White def. Taichi

It’s the battle of New Japan’s biggest douches. This
is one of those matches that I’ve also looked forward to when the blocks were
announced, not because it might turn out to be a classic masterpiece, but for
the sheer aura of two heels going at it. I can say, it delivered as expected.
If you’re expecting a clean match between two members of Bullet Club and
Suzuki-Gun then you’re watching the wrong match. The interferences and other
shenanigans actually added into the story. Gedo and Kanemaru played their roles
just as well too, with the former even strangling Miho Abe in the hair, how
dare he! Anyway, I think it speaks volumes to how great of a heel Jay is that
he makes Taichi beloved like Tanahashi! How can someone even be able to do
that? It’s rare to see Taichi work in the “babyface” role if you can
even call it that but yeah, Switchblade was clearly the dominant heel here and
in the end, got the win with a Bladerunner. A 15 minute clusterf*ck, but a good
one at that.

Hirooki
Goto def. Tomohiro Ishii

To end the night we have a classic matchup between
Ishii and Goto. If you wanna know what
strong style and fighting spirit is all about, then this match is the
embodiment of that. Last year in the G1 they had a similar hard hitting affair,
this year is no different. It’s always a treat to see these two each other in
the ring and man do they make you feel like they hate each other whenever they
go at it despite being in the same faction together. Elbows, chops, kicks, you
name every imaginable strike and they’ll punish each other with it. This will
probably go down as one of the underrated matches of the entire tournament but
it’s definitely up there for me in terms of favorites. You can never go wrong
with an Ishii vs. Goto match. Samurai Warrior gets a victory with a GTR, hoping
we get a re-match for the NEVER title down the line.

B Block Leaderboard:

10
Points = Jon Moxley

6
Points = Naito, Cobb, Goto, Ishii, Juice, White, Yano

4
Points = Taichi, Shingo Takagi

Night 9 Date: July 27, 2019 From: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium (Aichi, Japan) Undercard Results: Taichi, Suzuki, & Kanemaru def.
