Making a Case for Evolution 2

Lately, I’ve been going down on a women’s wrestling rabbit hole, rewatching some of my favorite matches and seeking out matches and wrestlers I’ve never seen before. Charlotte Flair posted about her five year anniversary on the main roster. WWE has been talking about the five years of the Women’s Revolution. I also recently finished the book Sisterhood of the Squared Circle by Pat Laparde, which chronicles the history of women’s wrestling and provides detailed profiles of some of the most influential women in the business. It’s a fantastic read and I encourage any history buff fans to check it out. And with so much women-centered content on my brain, I really got to thinking about why we should definitely have Evolution 2…when it’s safe to do so.

First, and most importantly, the fans want it! So many people have been clamoring for another Evolution pay-per-view over the last year and a half. A women-only event in WWE would have been a pipe dream only a few short years ago. Was the first event perfect? Absolutely not. The event was announced and then largely ignored in favor of the Saudi Arabia show, a show on which none of the women were allowed to compete. But much like the original #GiveDivasAChance movement, the fans took to social media to make sure the WWE women knew they had a huge amount of support. From fantasy booking to fanmade graphics, the support for another event is there and, given an appropriate amount of attention and build, this would be a wonderful event.

Speaking of fan support, WWE could take the opportunity to make Evolution into a cash cow. Prior to the first event, there was a Bella Army rally that was broken up due to its size. If WWE creates a controlled environment (an Axxess) for meet and greets, autographs, and pictures, they would make a lot of money. With how prominent women’s sports have stayed in the media, there would also be a ton of mainstream media attention on the event. This is the perfect opportunity to snag all those fancy corporate sponsorships, interviews, and talk show appearances to bring more eyes onto the product.

On the wrestling side of things, Evolution is the time to showcase all of the women’s titles and have all of them on the line again. This plus a few heated rivalry blow-off matches would make a stacked card. There are so many established stars and fan favorites; give them the time and watch them shine. This event could also be used to build up some of the women whom we don’t always get to see on television as well.

Obviously, creating Evolution 2 is not the best idea right now. The pandemic is wreaking havoc on many aspects of the industry, from limiting the amount of staff that can be present to straight up not allowing some talent to travel. Several of the top women are out for personal reasons. But once we can all safely and healthily come back together, Evolution 2 is definitely a project that should be considered.
