Wrestling Resurgence presents Arthouse Wrestling Volume 2

27/04/19, Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester

Back again this time with a new company that I haven’t reviewed for this website yet. Resurgence, my favourite company as of right now. I absolutely adore Resurgence, it is unique with a group of people behind it who are passionate about bringing out the art form of wrestling which I really like. Resurgence have sold out their last 5 shows in a row which is outstanding and I will tell anyone who listens that they absolutely need to go to one of these shows. Just do it man.

Jayde defeats Man Like Deriess, Hari Singh and Dani Luna

We kicked off the show with an absolute barnburner four way between four of the best young up and comers on the scene today. We had a debuting Deriess who is making waves in Attack, Kamikaze and Defiant. Next was the local lad himself Hari Singh who I know is bound to break out anytime soon, he’s one of the better wrestlers I have seen come out of Leicester for a while. Following him was the Dragon Pro Wrestling womens champion Dani Luna making her debut and finally we had Sanitarium member Jayde. The match began with Deriess and Jayde exchanging some friendly bants before Jayde went for the low blow. Deriess caught her leg twice and she went for a third one but decided to go with a headbutt instead. Then hell broke loose and we had a fast-paced match. Everyone did some wicked dives to the outside. We had a cheeky tower of doom spot were Jayde used her muscles to bring everyone down and Dani Luna took what looked like a nasty bump. Deriess hit a beautiful roll in cutter on Singh followed by a 450 splash which was kicked out off. Hari Singh then hit Deriess with a springboard cutter but Jayde came in to steal the pin and get the win. An absolutely incredible match. So so so so so good. What a way to start a show. Four of the best up and comers getting a chance to shine. Everybody impressed and Jayde getting the win may lead to a title shot down the line but after this how, quite a few people a in line for a title opportunity. Hari Singh was in the ring alone at the end. Is that leading to something? Hopefully. I like Hari and he has bags of potential.

CandyFloss vs Chakara is confirmed for June 8th

Next, we had Sierra Loxton come out who was scheduled to compete against the recently turned heel CandyFloss. Sierra tried to explain to the crowd that she was unable to compete due to an injury she had sustained the night before. CandyFloss then came out and savagely beat down Sierra and targeted the injured shoulder. This bought out her former best friend Chakara who chased CandyFloss off. Chakara then challenged CandyFloss for June eighth in Loughborough. Should be a good match.

Charli Evans defeats Carlos Ramo

WHAT A MATCH. This was super good, I cannot stress how much you should go out of your way to watch this. Charli and Carlos are superstars and proved it in this match. The match obviously began with some technical exchanges which should’ve been expected as both are technically strong performers. Carlos made for a great heel. Constantly trolling Charli and the crowd. Carlos and Charli exchanged massive chops. Carlos then got Charli in a full nelson lock. This lasted for a long time and Charli was constantly escaping it but she would still end up back in the move. She escaped numerous times and then she finally got out and hit Carlos with a huge chop. The two would then exchange massive shots and moves but neither one could put the other away. Eventually after a superb back and forth match, Charli would put Carlos away with a cradle DDT. Trust me, my words could not do justice as to how genuinely fantastic this match was. I absolutely urge you to check it out because I could not do it justice. One of the best matches of the night and thinking about it, maybe one of my favourite of the year. Charli always has exceptional matches at every Resurgence show.

Charli Evans Vs Kanji 3 has been confirmed for August 31st

A little bit of backstory. Back in November, Kanji and Charli Evans had an absolute cracking match, one of the best matches in Resurgence history easily. A rematch was then confirmed for March third in Nottingham and it was 2/3 falls. In my opinion this match fell just short of the original but it was still d guysgreat. By the way, I forgot to mention Charli won the first one and Kanji won the second one. After this match with Carlos, Charli challenged Kanji to a third match under ironwoman rules for the next Leicester show which is August thirty first. Kanji came out and simply accepted the challenge by saying done and they embraced. This match will be match of the year if it’s anything to go by their last two matches. So excited.

Hunter Brothers defeat The Henchmen

Going into this match, The Henchmen were 6-0 in Resurgence beating teams such as the Anti-Fun Police and Aussie Open. This time around, they would take on a team they have faced all over this country and have a huge history with, them being the debuting Hunter Brothers. The Hunters started this match by attacking The Henchmen, making themselves the bad guys. The Hunters were cocky and confident but also cowardly about the way the attacked The Henchmen. The Hunters would beat down Jim Diehard, constantly cornering him and stopping him from making the tag to Benton Destruction. The Hunters would get Diehard in place for a backdrop but Diehard who is absolutely huge, managed to flip out of it, take The Hunters out and make the tag. Benton would take both men out until the Hunters retook control. They would exchange tag team moves and then the Hunters managed to roll up Benton for the three! This is huge, The Hunter Brothers end the streak. Where do the Henchmen go from here? Besides the storyline developments, this match was really fun. I think The Henchmen are the most underrated team in wrestling and The Hunters are obviously always great. Hopefully, this will lead to a rematch.

Chuck Mambo defeat Big Grizzly

This was another great match. Grizz has this imposing aura about him. Last month he won a six way scramble in his debut and this time around, on paper, he should of won this. Mambo before this was yet to win a match in Resurgence. From the get-go, Mambo was fighting from underneath, Grizz was destroying Mambo and constantly had the advantage due to his size. Grizzly was hitting Mambo with power move after power move but Mambo was constantly kicking out of every pin attempt. Mambo fought back though with a flurry of chops and started to rattle Grizz. He hit Grizz with some huge moves and finished Grizz of with a springboard splash. Mambo was a great underdog here but I’m not sure about the result. I think Grizz would have been a great heel challenger to the Resurgence champion. However, maybe Mambo could build some steam now towards a Resurgence championship match of his own.

Spike Trivet defeats “Session Moth” Martina

Spike is a big bastard. He’s currently undefeated in Resurgence with wins against Jimmy Havoc, Cara Noir and Paul Robinson. Spike cut a killer promo before this and said some mental lines, it was absolutely nuts. He offered Martina some champagne and a plastic cup to drink it out of which was great. Spike was on form and managed to make his promo menacing yet absolutely hilarious. Spike and Martina went at it from the get go with forearms. Along with the action, the comedy was great. There was a point where they both drank their respective drinks and would continuously spit their drinks at each other. Spike would win this match with a rollup. Another big win for Spike over a completely different opponent compared to his other ones. This was probably the weakest match on the show but it wasn’t bad by any means. Excited to see what Spike does next.

Gene Munny defeats Jack Sexsmith by disqualification and therefore Sexsmith retains his Resurgence championship

It was this match that officially confirmed that these two are elite workers. Backstory, last time we were in Leicester, Sexsmith won a rumble to become Resurgence champion. At the last show in Nottingham, Sexsmith made his first defence of the championship, defeating Eddie Dennis in what was a really great main event. Also at that show, Gene Munny defeated Jimmy Havoc and was therefore given this title shot. Before the show began, there was a Q&A with Jack and he spoke about how this Resurgence championship is now his everything and he doubted Gene Munny who said online he would do whatever it takes. He said Gene doesn’t have it in him and Sexsmith knows in himself that he must do whatever it takes. Gene then interrupted and said Jack is underestimating him and he will do whatever it takes. Gene came out to a big pop and was quite clearly the favourite in this match. Sexsmith came out, not pandering too much to the crowd because he knew he had to be focused. Before the match began, Jack said to Gene  “whatever it takes” and then jumped Gene with a dropkick into the corner and straight away hits his finisher the double foot stomp to a standing Gene and Gene kicked out at two. Gene fought back however until he injured his leg going a moonsault. Sexsmith then targeted the leg and pretty much destroyed Munny’s leg. Munny fought back again however and hit all of his big moves but Sexsmith would not give up. Munny then hit a Big E esc spear to the outside on Jack which was very very scary. Both men then got back into the ring but Jack had grabbed his championship when the ref was tending to Gene. Gene then went for the Ainsley Lariat but Sexsmith clocked him with the championship and got himself disqualified, doing whatever it takes to keep his championship. I really liked this a lot. This was my favourite match of the night and both men told the story excellently. In thnink this is my favourite match of the year… Gene needs to get his rematch and this storyline has actually got a lot more interesting.

Overall thoughts: I think this is my favourite show of the year. Every match had something and Resurgence really do excel in having every match mean something in the long run. Every match is a match you should check out as well and I urge you to buy this for the cheap price of 99p on their on demand site on Vimeo. The next show is in Loughborough on June eighth, come along.
