What Should Be The Main Event of CMLL’s 85th Anniversary?

CMLL’s 85th anniversary show is on September 14, and the main event of the show is still in question.

For months, fans have clamored for LA Park vs Rush mask vs hair to be the main event. If last Friday’s Arena Mexico show was any indication, that match is not happening.

Rush is currently in a storyline with Volador Jr. The two have teased multiple matches against each other, including Volador and Matt Taven challenging Rush and El Terrible for the tag team championships.

However, the biggest tease came on Friday, where Volador challenged Rush to a hair vs hair match. Rush polled the crowd on whether they would rather see him face Volador or Park, to which they seemingly voted for Park.

Where does this leave the status of the main event? The match will supposedly be announced at Wednesday’s press conference. Does CMLL pull the trigger on a main event that the fans do not want? Or do they wait to see if Park loses his mask at TripleMania XXVI on Saturday (streaming live on AAA’s Twitch channel)?

Who competes in the match ultimately should come down to what will draw the most money. When Park returned to CMLL in March, that led to a string of some of the highest drawing Arena Mexico shows of the year. That is the match that should main event. For a myriad of reasons, it looks like it will not happen.

Park’s rivalry with Rush has revitalized his career like crazy in 2018. Losing his mask takes away a lot of his aura, which he doesn’t need just months after he broke back into mainstream lucha libre.

Volador is not Park as far as star power and intrigue goes. Him losing his hair to Rush would not be nearly as impactful as Park losing his mask. Then again, right now, nobody losing their mask or hair would be as impactful as Park, save for maybe Atlantis. However, Volador is still a major star. He has been a regular in main events and semifinals in Arena Mexico for some time now.

If CMLL can possibly get Park to do business next year and get him to lose his mask, then waiting is not a bad thing. In that time, Park can become an even bigger star in Mexico and the United States, and a match with Rush would draw even bigger then. For now, Rush vs Volador may not be our top choice to main event the 85th Anniversary show, but it will still be fine.
