NXT UK 13/03/2019
Tonight, we will see the in-ring debut of NXT UK’s hottest new signing, Kay Lee Ray and the main event will see Joe and Mark Coffey take on the team of Walter and the NXT UK Champion, Pete Dunne.
Flash Morgan Webster v Wolfgang
Webster, as always, is like a Pitbull; quick, tenacious and concise. He’s giving up a notable size difference and must use his speed to stay one step ahead of Wolfgang. Wolfgang locks Webster up in a deep Neck Crank and Morgan’s eyes almost pop out of his head. Ever the showman, Webster responds with two well executed suicide dives and eventually goes up and over the top rope, showcasing his highflying offence. He delivers his version of a Swanton Bomb, which he calls Shadow Over Malice, but it lands of Wolfgang’s back and isn’t enough to secure him the win. In the end, the power game wins out and Wolfgang unleashes his powerhouse move, the Caber Toss securing him the win.
Kassius Ohno promo, indicating he’s making NXT UK his home. How wonderful for us all.
Kenny Williams & Amir Jordan v Tyson T-Bone & Saxon Huxley
Another match where one side are giving up a size difference. However, these four guys work so well together, it doesn’t matter. Williams and Jordan are fun to watch. I love the athletic, high flying style. The flips, the reversals and the sequences that go with that style. T-Bone works hard to put them over, but Huxley is none commentary. T-Bone’s Standing Vertical Suplex is a thing of beauty. The match has a great pace to it, especially as Williams and Jordan pick up the pace, executing a tandem suicide dive and then a Swanton Bomb, which ultimately picks them up a very surprising victory. I’m not struck on Huxley, but I really enjoyed this match
I’ve never heard Jinny cut a promo and I was pleasantly surprised at how good she was at it. She mentions Toni Storm and naturally and deservedly, is setting her sights on the NXT UK Women’s Title.
Eddie Dennis Promo
Noam Dar takes the mic and delivers a cringeworthy in-ring promo before being gratefully interrupted by Mark Andrews.
Xia Brookside promo, saying Rhea Ripley is a bully and she won’t stand for it anymore. Brookside has some issues. Her character is not believable in the slightest and I struggle to see how she is going to close to being able to give Ripley convincing competition.
Sometimes I think NXT UK has it nailed but this episode is full of promos and interviews and feels like they crammed too much into their hour-long show.
Candy Floss v Kay Lee Ray
Time to see what all the hype is about. After a series of attempted Arm Bar sequences, a single drop kick and a Widow’s Peak slam, my theory thus far, is not a lot. A very disappointing debut.
Moustache Mountain promo. They’re taking care of business in the NXT tag team championship tournament but will be back next week.
The Coffey Brothers v Walter & Pete Dunne
This match gives us an intense performance from Dunne’ a technical masterclass in body manipulation and the ground and pound technique synonymous with the British strong style. Walter is a beast, personally he’s not my cup of tea but he’s a big, agile guy and I get why people like him.
The Coffey Brothers have undeniable chemistry, cleverly cutting the ring in half, but at times they can seem a little sluggish. They have a habit of overselling their intensity and it can make them look burnt out. During this match they use their tandem offence to give Walter a good run for his money. It’s refreshing for him to not seem so invincible.
Walter and Dunne appear to work well together, but we all know that this is ultimately going to break down and it’s likely we’ll see a championship match at some point in the future. Perhaps at the NXT Takeover prior to Wrestlemania
In an incredibly impressive show of strength, Joe Coffey confidently executes a German Suplex to Walter. Dunne’s Moonsault off the top turnbuckle is also beautiful to watch. Other nice spots include Walter’s Dropkick, Butterfly Suplex and the way he locks in his Boston Crab.
The Coffey Brothers get Walter up on their shoulders, knocking him to the mat with a flying fist, to get them the closest to pinning Walter anyone has gotten since his arrival on NXT UK. Walter does look a little clumsy towards the end in a spot where I think he was supposed to fall out of the ring but didn’t. He and Dunne lock in synced submissions to the Coffey brothers. An earlier double German Suplex to BOTH Coffey brothers had busted Walter open, which you don’t realize until he’s delivered a Powerbomb and secured the victory.
The match ends with Dunne attempting to pick the Championship belt up but Walter puts his foot on it, picks it up, looks longingly at it before thrusting it back at him.
