I have to say, researching this article has been so much fun. I’ve found myself watching highlight reels and top ten moves videos of wrestlers I’ve not watched much before. Some of the moves on this list look the best when they are sold well, for example, Jushin Liger’s Koppou Kick. Some moves surprised me, for example, Carmella? I genuinely think she has made the most in ring progress of anyone on the current WWE roster and her Code of Silence submission looks great.
It also got me thinking, what makes a move look good? There are various components that go into make a move look good. First, it’s timing. As a match builds in momentum, a great move, executed at the right time, can step up the gear of any bout. Signature moves indicate the climax of a match, those moments when the crowd are on the edge of their seats, waiting in anticipation for their favorite signature move to be unleashed are tangible. Sometimes, it’s the height and speed of a move, Jeff Hardy’s Swanton Bomb and AJ Style Phenomenal Forearm always looks best when they get that extra inch in the air and a Spear looks best when someone barges into and gets turned inside out. It’s also about the impact, the sound it makes, the thud as the recipient falls to the mat, the look on their face, the way they sell it.
My advice is to go lock yourself in a quite room for half an hour and watch each of these moves and enjoy the brilliant spectacle that is pro-wrestling.
